Abstract: The Roman Inquisition in Malta was active from 1591 to 1798. From a linguistic point of view, the local Tribunal documents can be of use as the notaries wrote word expressions, swear words and sentences as they were spoken by the locals. This means that one can find these Maltese phrases written in trial documents that were written in Italian. This sheds light on the spoken Maltese during the time the Knights of Malta were on the Islands.
