National School Fruit Scheme (NSFS)
Issue Date: 2012
Abstract: Research was conducted to investigate the perceptions of parents of State Primary School children regarding the National School Fruit Scheme (NSFS). The main aims of this research were to uncover the parents' views and beliefs concerning the NSFS, reveal how the NSFS influenced the dietary behaviour of parents and children while exploring the nutritional knowledge, attitudes, and awareness of parents regarding the importance of fruit and vegetable intake as part of a healthy lifestyle. This research also aspired to identify any pattern similarities or differences which could emerge from the main geographical regions parents came from. A self-administrated questionnaire was delivered to parents, and a set of five focus group interviews were carried out. Overall results showed that parents, especially those coming from the Northern and Gozo regions, were knowledgeable of the significance of fruit and vegetable intake as part of a healthy lifestyle, and showed positive attitudes towards fruit and vegetable consumption. Most parents agreed with the NSFS but would like the scheme to operate more frequently. As parents from the Northern and Gozo regions reported the most up-to-date knowledge towards fruit and vegetable consumption, they had the highest expectations for the NSFS. The NSFS did not strongly influence the fruit and vegetable intake of parents and children. Fresher and wider variety of fruit and vegetables are recommended to increase intake and reduce waste. Further educational activities should be organised more frequently to promote healthier lifestyles amongst children who make up tomorrow's generation.
