Abstract: | This thesis addresses a subject that has never been formally discussed in academic literature, albeit being of considerable interest to Maltese translators. The availability and evaluation of translation technologies for Maltese is, in fact, a matter that concerns translators as well as developers. Being one of the first studies to focus on translation technologies for Maltese, this thesis was written with the purpose of serving as a preliminary study in a field that needs to be explored further. As such, a wide scope of study was applied so as to cover the largest part of the field possible. Thus, in this thesis, we evaluate a wide array of translation technologies including general language technologies such as electronic dictionaries, termbases, corpora and spellcheckers; as well as other translation technologies such as translation memory software, terminology management systems and machine translation. These evaluations are primarily aimed at translators as the main users of translation technologies, which will be better informed on the best options available. Nevertheless, since this study will pinpoint the various shortcomings that we have encountered during the testing phase of our evaluation, we believe that it has also the potential to serve as a catalyst for the development of better translation technologies for Maltese. |
