Evaluating accidents by uninsured drivers

Abstract

This research sets out to establish the level of knowledge among the general public as regards to what one should do when involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. Many people are uncertain about what needs to be done in these situations since most of them are not well informed. In this dissertation one finds information about how victims of accidents caused by uninsured drivers are able to claim for compensation. The bodies set up to handle these compensation claims are identified. The penalties for conviction of driving without insurance are described as well as when they are imposed. One can also see the legal aspects of this whole issue. In motor insurance, there are different types of insurance cover. It is obligatory by law to have at least third party liability insurance cover. Nevertheless, some drivers are putting other people's lives in danger by not having any form of insurance. More information needs to be provided regarding the consequences of driving without insurance. People should be well informed about the cover provided by the policies they are buying so that they can ensure that they are covered correctly, especially when driving abroad. The reasons as to why some people choose to drive without insurance are detailed in this dissertation. Questionnaires were completed by members of the general public in order to get an idea about their knowledge on this issue. Also, interviews were carried out in order to obtain the opinion of employees of insurance companies and those of a lawyer. Finally, the conclusion was reached that the public is not well informed about the consequences of uninsured driving. This conclusion suggests that something needs to be done about this situation and in this dissertation some solutions to this problem are discussed.
