The aim of this study is to investigate and broaden the concept of Craft, Design and Technology (CDT) in Malta. In fulfilling this aim, the author conducted a qualitative research within twelve Secondary Schools to elicit students' opinions and preferences. These regard the students' subject-option choice and the possibility of a Needlecraft component in a Craft, Design and Technology syllabus within the Maltese Educational System. In due course, a quantitative study was carried out. The author analysed the popularity of Needlecraft, Craft, Art, Graphical Communication and Home Economics before and after the change in subject-option choice, in effect since the scholastic year 1991/2. In chapter 3, the author analysed possible ways how CDT may be integrated in Malta. Five possible components, which are Needlecraft, Craft, Art, Graphical Communication and Home Economics, were identified to be integrated within CDT. It is suggested that CDT will be offered at Forms 1, 2 and 3. Then, each component subject will be offered separately at Form 4. Chapter 4 includes the summary of a typical booklet which may be given to teachers. The aim of this booklet is to guide students in carrying out courseworks related to Needlecraft. The complete booklet is appended in Appendix. Volume 2, Part 2 of this dissertation.en_GB
