The University of Malta and the promotion of lifelong education for the community

Abstract

This study is designed to investigate the contributions of the University of Malta to the promotion of lifelong education for the Maltese community. University education is regarded as essential and beneficial to any society. Hence the organisation of its resources must be geared at the provision of undergraduate and graduate programmes, and general and professional continuing education programmes. All programmes -Of the University must there be aimed to serve as an aid to the general development of the society of which the University is an integral part. The new roles taken up by the University in this context are studied with reference to the theoretical and philosophical implications of lifelong education. The implications derived from this study are that there need to be more cooperation between different bodies within and outside the University that can contribute to the actualisation of a lifelong education programme, leading to the establishment of a Department or Faculty of Lifelong Education within the University of Malta.
