Creative teaching

Abstract: Many argue that music is a creative art. In my dissertation, I will attempt to find out whether the Music option syllabus in the Maltese state school curriculum reflects this description. In September 2009, Music was introduced as an optional subject in one college as a pilot project. In September 2011, it became an optional subject in all colleges. This study investigates whether creativity is encouraged in the syllabus. Additionally, it examines whether creativity is evident and encouraged during the Music lessons. Moreover, it explores the teachers' definitions and perceptions of music and creativity, and whether they fit in together. This dissertation also tries to identify the barriers which might hinder creativity both in the Music syllabus and in the actual lessons. In light of the results obtained, this dissertation suggests some changes which may be implemented to improve the element of creativity in the music syllabus and lessons.
