| Abstract: | This essay will deal with one of the female Johannine characters, namely Mary of Bethany, the sister of Martha and Lazarus. She features in Jn 11 and 12. Through studying these two chapters I aim to show the importance of the role of this Mary of Bethany within the narrative of the Fourth Gospel. I will do so by comparing her with other characters and by examining her words and actions which will lead me to conclude that the Fourth Evangelist considers her as a paradigm of discipleship. |
