Abstract: Are Maltese Internet users aware of the risks they are increasingly facing online? Do they possess what it takes to protect their data, identity and devices? While the emergence of new technological developments has remarkably changed the way individuals share information, it has also opened the doors for a lot of security threats which compromise end-users' online privacy. An analysis of Maltese home users' perception towards security and privacy is offered as the subject for an intricate discussion on security education and practices of users both on their PC's and on their smart phone devices. The examination of a range of popular activities such as general browsing experience, e-mail access, security for children and usage of social media on the Internet reveals awareness, possible lacunae and suggestions in the field of education, law and industry on the matter. In order to determine the local perspective towards information security, a two-tier research methodology was chosen, with questionnaires and interviews being conducted with different stakeholders. Research results show that Maltese are concerned about the threats they face online and generally implement acceptable security countermeasures on their PC's. Conversely, users lack measures of good practice on their smart phone devices which calls for local authorities and the private industry to focus on providing better education and awareness, especially in this regard.
