Title: Exploring work-life balance in petroleum surveying : a qualitative approach

Abstract: This research project examined the perceptions, emotions and feelings encountered by petroleum surveyors in respect to the construct of work-life balance. The aim of the study was to primarily discern whether a work-life balance exists and if not, to explicate the social and psychological implications that emanate from this phenomenon. A phenomenological approach has been adopted for this study and eleven (11) semi-structured face to face interviews have been conducted. A purposeful sampling procedure has been applied and participants have been chosen from three different companies. Interview transcripts were analysed using thematic coding to develop the relevant constructs and themes. The findings unequivocally demonstrate that petroleum surveyors encounter a degree of work-life conflict on a daily basis with respect to their personal commitments, hobbies and vacation leave. In addition, relevant concerns emerged related to occupational, health and safety, staffing and psychological well-being of employees. The research suggests that managers need to adopt an approach that provides for more flexible, linear and less bureaucratic structures and processes. Managers are urged to allow their employees a higher degree of freedom, to involve them in the decision making process and to encourage the support of co-workers to enable them to satisfy their personal requirements. In addition, the research recommends that surveying companies should adopt a culture of two way communication. Moreover, management should take a firm stand and take the necessary corrective actions where employees' health and safety is concerned. The aim of the study was to increase awareness in general and to act as an eye opener to managers to realise the importance they should bestow to the issue of work-life balance if they truly aim to improve their work social environment and increase employees' commitment.
