Abstract: Each and every country has an identity, which is then passed on throughout communities. Today culture is a very important aspect of a community. It is of value and it should be cherished and protected from being lost. The value of culture is also recognised by the European Union. Europe is rich with diverse cultures, and thus the European Capital of Culture tries to grasp such essence in order to transmit this within different countries and communities. Malta can become a host of the European Capital of Culture in 2018, and this compelled the researcher to delve into what is being done in Malta with regards to the European Capital of Culture. Using a questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews the researcher sought to find out what the population thinks about Malta's bid and how major entities involved in the bid are preparing for the event. This research will be looking into the importance of the European Capital of Culture, the knowledge of the population regarding the event and to outline Malta's progress in becoming a host.
