| Abstract: | The purpose of this research is to assess motivation at the place of work and its relation to employment retention. The research questions for this research were to analyse the best practices of employee retention in F&B departments in 5 star hotels in Malta; to establish similar and different ideas of the HR managers, F&B managers and F&B supervisors and; to determine what importance does motivation plays in employment retention. In-depth interviews were conducted with 4 HR managers, 4 F&B managers, and 4 F&B supervisors in order to answer the research questions. All the respondents are part of 5 star hotels in Malta. Results of this study have shown that although employment turnover is still present in the industry, employers consider it as a financial cost that can always be reduced. However, there are other less apparent costs that should be factored in, such as emotional costs. The best practices that contribute to low turnover rates highlighted by the respondents were: motivation, appraisal, advancement, engagement, communication and facilities. Organisations have much to gain if they ensure that managers at all levels have the necessary skills to retain and engaged valued employee talent. |
