Abstract: | This research deals with the role of interpretation in museums. It focuses on one specific museum; the Palace of the Inquisition located in the city of Birgu, in the South of Malta. The information is based on investigation from selected sources of research and activities including observations and discussions with experts within the sector of museums and interpretation. The research provides general information about the subject and background information regarding the Palace. Besides that, it also presents a detailed account of its current situation from a discussion made by the senior curator of the museum. One of the main objectives of this research is to examine the section of the Prison Cells within the Inquisitors' Palace. Thus, it suggests new interpretative techniques that could be ideal to enhance visitors' experience in the museum. Some of the interpretive methods investigated include the use of particular prison themes to the visitors whilst creating a link between the present visitors and the former prisoners, and extraordinary guided tours such as candle light night tours. Furthermore, the use of lightning and sound techniques is highlighted as possible innovative approaches of interpretation. This study also reveals that there is the requirement of further research within this sector. Museums must acknowledge the importance of interpretation within their institutions as they are vital to increase visitors' satisfaction and exceed their expectations. Regarding the Palace of the Inquisition, if these interpretative approaches are implemented, they must be further studied by taking into consideration visitors' comments and evaluations. |
