Abstract

My aim in this dissertation is to try to give a clear picture of the local situation, regarding Italian, in Government Schools, from the ·Primary level to the Sixth Form. This is done by the aid of 400 questionnaires which provide an indication of the spread of the Italian language and culture among Maltese students. This study includes an explanation of the terms 'language' and 'culture', and their role, function and meaning in the teaching of a foreign language. This is followed by a detailed analysis of the questionnaires, where the local situation of Italian as a foreign language is examined. At the same time, alternatives and/or possibilities are suggested that might improve and increase the spreading of the Italian language and culture amongst our students.
