Issue Date: 2013
Abstract: The aim of this research is to try and identify any expenditure patterns amongst low lost carrier passengers in Malta. Also, it aims to find out if there is a relationship between low cost carriers and the accommodation that the respondent has chosen. These aims are analysed through a questionnaire randomly distributed to respondents within different demographics. According to general findings, it is safe to conclude that respondents mainly travel via low cost carrier due to affordable prices. Another general finding is that although the respondents travelled via low cost, from those respondents who stated accommodation, the choice ranges from a flat or apartment to a 4 star hotel. Respondents seem to prefer to spend less on the air fare and accommodation and have more to spend during the actual trip. Although they are used by everyone, expenditure patterns of low cost carrier passengers vary depending on criteria such as gender, age and also occupation. In the context of this long essay, it is safe to say that Ryanair dominates in all scenarios and is the most popular choice of airline within these respondents. The main conclusion is that the respondents of this questionnaire prefer to spend less on the air fare and accommodation, meaning that they are opting for shorter stays but travel more often.
