Authors: Bianco, Marc
Keywords: Sustainable development -- Malta -- Marsaskala

Issue Date: 2012
Abstract: The aims of this research was to propose ways and actions, of making Marsaskala more attractive to all those Maltese and tourists, who visit or live in a sustainable way, thus not impeding future generations from enjoying the village's charm. This study takes into account the village's natural setting, and innovative ideas and incentives similar to those adopted in other destinations with similar characteristics. Data was collected by means of structured interviews with four different groups, that is, visitors, locals, foreigners living, as well as businesses in Marsaskala. The various groups were asked to answer a set of questions, ranging from whether a hotel or yacht marina would be viable in the area, to abstract questions such as how they rate the village with regards to cleanliness, safety, attractions, and the amenities. The study concluded that Marsaskala should strive to attract the 'quality tourists' and should maintain its 'relaxing away from it all atmosphere'. The author also gives some recommendations as to what type of hotel would best suit the village and what measures should be taken in order to maximize sustainability, whilst stressing the point that professional advice from outside sources should ideally be sought.
