| Abstract: | My thesis focuses on the author Roberto Saviano, who was born in Naples. He became notorious in 2006 thanks to his bestseller Gomorrah. The book vividly describes how powerful and effective „il sistema‟ namely the criminal organisation, is in keeping people silent. The book Gomorrah presents real facts taken from juridical acts. Saviano manages to uncover these facts to help the reader to understand the reasons why the people of Naples fear the “camorra” so much that they prefer to remain silent rather than face the unpleasant consequences. My thesis centres on the civil commitment of Roberto Saviano and the huge controversy that surrounded Italy in 2006. In my thesis I would like to illustrate Saviano's life and works comparing it to other authors and journalists that have previously written about the mafia. Furthermore Girolamo Lo Verso‟s psychoanalytic books will be fundamental to demostrate the innovative information that Saviano reports about the evolution of the Camorra. Moreover it will be important not also to talk about his books but also about the two films coming from Saviano‟s works namely, Gomorrah and Tatanka. At last I will discuss in detail the numerous critics that Saviano endured particulary in Gomorrah, trying also to analyze various aspects of the book that made it the italian bestseller in the last decade. The aim of my thesis is to commend Saviano both as a man of character and as a writer. Saviano's Gomorrah revolutionised Italy. His courage in publishing Gomorrah which condemns the injustice of the camorra, lead to a dramatic change in his life. He now lives under police round the clock protection. |
