The scope of this dissertation was to study the possibility of using welded reinforcement grids as shear reinforcement in concrete structures instead of conventional ties presently used. Being still an innovative solution, the use of welded grids relies on the effect of the welding on the reinforcement bars which holds the grid together. The various types of welding systems available will be discussed and compared. Coupons were used to test the strength of each type of welding system, to identify the optimal system to be used. Importance was also given to what is happening in foreign countries, with particular reference in the United States. Concrete reinforced beams were used as test specimens, using both conventional and welded shear reinforcement. These were then failed in shear, producing comparative results between conventional ties and three different welded reinforcement grid forms. The tests are the first of their kind to be undertaken locally and recommendations are given for further studies on the given subject.en_GB
