Issue Date: 2013
Abstract: In the last decades the gambling sector has undergone radical changes. With the help of new technologies, the actions that once took place only in designated locations, typically casinos or racecourses, can now be carried out in the comfort of one's home. Even more, through the introduction of smartphones, gamblers are able to carry with them their favourite casino in their pocket or bag everywhere they go. As a consequence of this, those who, for some reason or other, would have never considered walking into a casino are now bombarded with pop-ups tempting them to try out some new game which is only one click away. This develpment has resulted in the need of new terminology for new concepts that the on-line sector has conceived. The aim of this work is precisely that of providing a snapshot of the current terminological situation of the MT in the remote gaming sector, mainly from a regulatory perspective, and compiling this information in a specialised glossary on the matter. This will subsequently help us also to analyse what processes are currently being employed in the formation of MT terms in this sector. The collation of reference books and specialised glossaries in the MT would also greatly contribute to the standardisation of the MT and help translators to produce homogenous and clear translations, especially in cases where technical terms are not readily available. This work will commence through a brief overview of the sector and the main documents available, and of the concept of multilingualism present in the EU. An analysis will follow of the challenges that translation presents, and an evaluation of the notion of equivalence in translation. At the end of the chapter the benefits of the compilation of terminology and the challenges of word creation will also be examined. The second chapter will provide an explanation of the aims of this terminological study, the choice of terms and the sources used. This chapter will also include an analysis of the methodology applied for the compilation of this glossary together with an examination of the MT terms and the methods of translation. A detailed explanation of the structure of the glossary will also be provided. The third chapter will constitute the core part of this study and will incorporate the glossary (EN to MT) consisting of 155 terms used in the remote gaming regulatory sector. Each term will be specifically analysed and notes, considerations or alternative terms will be inserted where deemed appropriate. In the concluding chapter a brief overview of the main word-formation processes will be given and suggestions will be proposed for the standardisation of MT terminology.
