Abstract: The game of handball in Malta has existed for the past twenty years. It was first introduced within the Skola Sport Programme in 1993 and the Malta Handball Association was founded in 1995 to assist in establishing this sport. The research aims at focusing on the development of this game locally and more specifically at school and club level. This study has gathered data regarding the issues which are contributing to the growth and development of the game. The study also investigates any difficulties and hindrances which are being encountered by both teachers and coaches involved in this game. Perceptions and ideas about the game as practised and played in the local scene are supported by recommendations for improvement and further development of handball. This research is conducted through a qualitative approach with data collected from interviews carried out with six teachers, six coaches and a representative from the Malta Handball Association. The data collected is analysed and the main findings are discussed. Results not only confirm that there is a progressive development of the game locally but also highlights the main concerns which are hindering further development. Data also presents recommendations for improvement which can contribute to future growth of the game of handball in Malta.
