Abstract: Background: Ileo-anal pouch surgery has become the operation of choice in the management of patients with ulcerative colitis. There is however a dearth in international and local literature regarding their lived experience. Objective: The aim of this research was to explore the experiences of individuals living with an ileo-anal pouch and to set out the implications of these experiences. The study explored the impact of ileo-anal pouch surgery on one's life, and examined what barriers and enhancers had subsequently affected the experience of these individuals. Design: A qualitative design using a phenomenological approach informed by the principles of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Setting: The study took place at the Stoma Care Unit of an acute hospital in Malta. Participants: Ten individuals who have an ileo-anal pouch formed due to ulcerative colitis. Methodology: Purposeful sampling was utilized to recruit participants. Data were collected between October 2012 and December 2012. All semi-structured interviews were audio-taped and transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Results: Three inter-related super-ordinate themes emerged that communicate the essence of patients' lived experiences of living with an ileo-anal pouch. These are: 'A lifeline to a better future'; 'A different life'; and 'Supportive connections'. Conclusions: Life after ileo-anal pouch surgery improved when compared to the days when participants were living with ulcerative colitis. However, some of the participants are still living a restricted lifestyle, with a considerable number of them reporting profound changes to their physical and inner self. The study revealed satisfaction with the support and information given. Yet participants desired more information regarding aspects pertaining to sexual relationships, as well as possible implications that could result due to surgery. A need for the implementation of an improved follow-up system was identified to enable ongoing care and support.
