Abstract: Research regarding the impact of eco-certified hotels on the environment in Malta is very limited. This study disseminates data provided by eco-certified hotels and evaluates if 'green' investments have led to a more sustainable environment. Malta's twenty 5 and 4 star eco-certified hotels were asked to complete a questionnaire about RET and related investments. Additionally they were asked to provide energy and water consumption data before and after they became eco-certified. Information was extrapolated from this data to address the research question. Hotels have invested in green measures and the majority are meeting their CSR in their daily operation. Since hotels calculate their energy and water consumption per room, a small saving per room per day leads to substantial savings over a one year period. A saving of 0.1m3 water per occupied room per day can result in an annual average saving of 6,816m3 of water. Similarly, if a hotel conserves 1kWh per occupied room per day, it can save approximately 59,916 kgCO2 emissions per year. With all the investments committed, this financial burden can only be converted into improved profits and a reduction of the carbon footprint.
