Abstract: This dissertation is aimed at understanding nude art, together with its historical and critical framework. Such a structure has been formulated by means of a close study of various international texts on nude art, as well as those covering the whole context of contemporary art. A number of theoretical writings have been consulted so as to discover the conceptual grounds of this art form. Publications by Maltese scholars and artists were studied as well as writings by foreign authors so as to create an understanding of both. My thesis strongly attempts to assimilate the two in the hopes of giving rise to a holistic outcome.
