Outgoing Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella, awarded Honorary Doctorate by University of Split

Outgoing University of Malta Rector, Professor Alfred J. Vella, was one of three recipients of honorary doctorates conferred by the University of Split during a ceremony held on 15 June at the Split City Museum in Croatia.

Professor Vella, whose research interests lie in the field of environmental chemistry, received the distinguished recognition alongside Professor Dr Piotr Stepnowski, Rector at the University of Gdansk and professor of analytical chemistry, as well as Professor Emeritus of Archaeology and Epigraphy, Emilio Marin, each in recognition of their valued contributions to academia and society.

The ceremony was opened by the Rector of the University of Split, Professor Dr Dragan Ljutić, who addressed the laureates and guests.

Associate Professor Dr Maja Krželj, Dean of the Faculty of Marine Science and Chair of the Committee for the Conferment of the Honorary Doctorate upon Professor Vella, presented the committee’s statement and the laureate’s biography.

Professor Vella was formally proclaimed an honorary doctor by Rector Ljutić, who vested him with the ceremonial gown and honorary sash of the University of Split and presented him with the honorary doctorate diploma.

The ceremony concluded with a performance of the academic anthem Gaudeamus Igitur by the Bozzotti Quartet.

The University of Malta congratulates Professor Vella on this prestigious recognition and wishes him continued success in their future endeavours.

The University of Split, a member of the SEA-EU Alliance alongside the University of Malta and another seven universities, is celebrating the 52nd anniversary since its founding in 1974.
