Launch of the 2nd National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security

The second National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security was launched by Deputy Prime-Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs & Tourism, Hon. Ian Borg on Wednesday 3 December 2025.

Building on the achievements of Malta’s first National Action Plan launched in 2020, the second NAP sets out a comprehensive agenda aligned with UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which recognises the disproportionate impact of conflict on women and girls, while affirming their vital role in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, mediation and governance.

Malta’s second NAP introduces inclusive and transformative measures to advance the Women, Peace and Security agenda, focusing on four key pillars: promotion, prevention, participation, and relief and recovery.

Dr Alexandra Schaerrer Cumming, Research Support Officer and Guest Lecturer at the University, was on the team that drafted the Plan. At the event, she explained that key targets of the Second NAP include strengthening efforts to prevent and respond to gender-based violence, supporting women’s participation in the field of peace and security, and fostering strategic collaborations with international organisations and civil society.

The Plan is available online to read through.
