AI Futures event sparks cross-disciplinary dialogue on the future of society

The Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) recently hosted AI Futures: What Kind of Future Are We Building?, bringing together students, academics, professionals, and members of the public for an evening exploring the societal implications of artificial intelligence.

The event featured The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist It begins by examining concerns surrounding the societal impact of artificial intelligence, before considering the opportunities these technologies may bring across areas such as healthcare, science, and innovation. Its overall message is that the future is not determined by technology alone, but also by the choices made by individuals, institutions, and governments. The documentary highlights the importance of education and critical awareness in helping people understand what AI can and cannot do, recognise their rights, and engage actively in shaping how these technologies are developed and used.

The Panel Discussion and the Audience Q & A, provided an opportunity for the participants to reflect on themes raised in the documentary, including trust in AI systems, education, governance, human creativity, and the responsibilities of universities in preparing graduates for an AI-enabled society.

A particularly positive aspect of the event was the diversity of attendees. Participants represented several University of Malta faculties and disciplines, including Faculty of ICT, Faculty of Laws, Humanities and Science, creating an interdisciplinary discussion that reflected the broad reach of artificial intelligence across society. The different perspectives highlighted that AI is no longer solely a technological topic but also raises legal, social, educational, and ethical questions.

The event forms part of the Faculty of ICT's ongoing commitment to encouraging informed dialogue on emerging technologies and their wider societal implications. As AI continues to influence an increasing number of disciplines and professions, universities have an important role in creating opportunities for critical discussion and collaboration across different fields of expertise.
