The Platform for Migration at the University of Malta expresses its concern at the 2027 Budget measures to introduce high transport fees and to withdraw free childcare services for third country nationals (TCNs). This will impose a disproportionate financial burden on one part of Malta’s workforce, raising serious questions about equality, fairness and social inclusion.
These measures are fundamentally discriminatory in targeting one sector of the local workforce. They are also unfair in singling out those who, while contributing to the local economy, including through their taxes, have practically no voice and have no vote, and therefore, are in no position to safeguard their rights. It seems reprehensible to target what are effectively punitive measures at the TCN sector where many of the most vulnerable workers are to be found.
The Platform for Migration calls on the Government of Malta to stand by its affirmed position (see for example, Poverty Strategy; Integration Strategy), in favour of inclusivity, reducing poverty, and supporting marginalised groups, and to call off the discriminatory measures, extending goodwill and commitment to the entire workforce without exceptions.
The Platform for Migration is one of a number of platforms at the University of Malta that consist of groups of academic staff who discuss issues and undertake projects on specific areas and stimulate interdisciplinary research activities. The goal of the Platform for Migration is to contribute to an equitable, more sustainable and more inclusive society that brings benefits to migrants and their families, communities of origin, destination and transit, as well as their sending and receiving countries.
