Following a successful edition of the CALE (Critical Adult Learning and Education) in November 2025, the Faculty of Education at the University of Malta has published an e-book containing all the abstracts of the papers presented at the Conference.
CALE (Critical Adult Learning and Education) is a bi-annual research conference organised by the UNESCO Co-Chair in Global Adult Education at the University of Malta, currently jointly held by Prof. Peter Mayo and Dr Maria Brown, both from the Department of Arts, Open Communities and Adult Education.
They are also two of the three co-editors of the book, along with researcher Peri Tutar.
The conference brought together over 70 participants from South and North America, Africa, Europe, and Asia, reflecting the global reach and contemporary relevance of Critical Adult Learning and Education (CALE). Dedicated exclusively to critical adult education and learning, the event provided a platform for scholars and practitioners to engage in dialogue at a particularly significant historical juncture.
The discussions unfolded against a backdrop characterised by the rise of populism, the blurring of boundaries between fact and misinformation, increasing militarisation, corporate encroachment into public spaces, and a growing tendency to reduce education to a narrowly defined technical exercise. In response to these challenges, the papers presented at the conference collectively reaffirm the urgency and importance of critical adult education research and practice worldwide.
The e-book is accessible online and serves as a valuable resource for researchers, educators, and students engaged in the field of adult learning and education.
