To mark this important milestone, the University of Malta’s Equity Office, in collaboration with Dr Benjamin Matthews from the University’s Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology and the Marketing, Communications and Alumni Office, has come together to celebrate and highlight the importance of creating an inclusive environment.
On this occasion, throughout the week, two informative videos are being launched, reaffirming the University’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community and a strong sense of belonging for all.
The University of Malta offers a programme in Applied Linguistics for Maltese Sign Language for those interested in developing their knowledge of Sign Linguistics and teaching competencies for use in community and higher/further education settings.
The course, which is sponsored by the Ministry for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector, is aimed at students who already possess an advanced level of proficiency in Maltese Sign Language and wish to specialise in teaching the language.
Like any other language, Maltese Sign Language has its own vocabulary, structure, and grammar, and should be recognised as an independent language rather than being associated with or derived from other spoken languages. Its recognition represents an important step towards accessibility, inclusion, and equal participation within Maltese society.
The University of Malta would like to thank students David Xuereb and Keith Callus for their participation in this initiative.
This anniversary serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about Maltese Sign Language and to encourage greater inclusion in everyday communication. Even learning a few signs can help foster more accessible and inclusive interactions within our community.
