Campus 103.7 broadcaster Coryse Borg interviews photographer Lorenzo Agius

Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta is currently hosting a landmark cultural event: the first retrospective exhibition of internationally-renowned photographer Lorenzo Agius. Titled Look At Me: Framing the Iconic, this extraordinary exhibition runs until the 2nd November, offering visitors an immersive journey through more than three decades of unforgettable photography.

This exhibition marks not only the arrival of a world-class artistic project, but also the homecoming of an artist whose Maltese roots have informed a career of international acclaim. Lorenzo first rose to prominence in the mid-1990s with his now-legendary portraits and poster of the cast of the 'Trainspotting' film, which propelled him into the spotlight.

In the years that followed, Lorenzo became a creative force behind some of the most memorable portraits in contemporary culture. From the Spice Girls to David Beckham, from Madonna to Jack Nicholson, his images helped shape how the world sees these cultural icons. Each portrait bears his unmistakable stamp - simultaneously bold and intimate, meticulously composed yet alive with spontaneity.

Look At Me: Framing the Iconic is designed as an immersive, sensory-rich experience that captures both the aesthetic sophistication and emotional depth of Lorenzo’s work. The exhibition features four atmospheric rooms. Prints are presented without glass to remove the traditional barrier between viewer and subject, while projections, soundscapes and spatial interventions recreate the rhythms of Lorenzo’s studio - from the music and instinct that fuel his shoots to the silence that allows his subjects to reveal their true selves.

A particularly compelling highlight of the exhibition is an intimate video interview conducted by Campus 103.7 broadcaster Coryse Borg. In this special feature, Coryse speaks to Lorenzo about how his Maltese heritage has shaped his artistic vision, the story behind the now-iconic 'Trainspotting' poster, the shoots he remembers as especially memorable or challenging, the vibrant 'Cool Britannia' cultural era of the 1990s, and his advice for young people aspiring to enter the creative arts. Their conversation adds a personal dimension to the exhibition, revealing the passion and thought behind Lorenzo’s acclaimed body of work.

Curated by Prof. Charlene Vella and designed by Mather & Co., the exhibition offers free admission and is open every day at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta except Mondays (weekdays 9am – 9pm; weekends and feast days 10am – 9pm).

For anyone with an interest in photography, visual culture or the creative arts, Look At Me: Framing the Iconic is a rare opportunity to witness the career-defining work of an artist with local roots who has helped shape global visual culture - and to hear his story in his own words.
