UM Racing makes history at the Formula Student Competition

The UM Racing team competed in the IMeche Formula Student competition.

Their EV racing car, which is the first Maltese EV to be designed, built and raced internationally, has managed to pass the scrutineering (technical, regulation and safety checks), and managed to compete in the dynamic (racing) events. Notwithstanding the difficulties faced in the past weeks and days, the UM Racing team persisted and managed to compete in the competition, achieving an extraordinary result.

Of the 120 UK and international competitors in the competition, 59 participated in the dynamic events. From these 59 participants, only 24 managed to pass scrutineering.

Under UK conditions (it rained all weekend, soaking the team and the car through), the UM Racing Vehicle managed to complete the gruelling endurance race of 25 high-speed laps and placed 8th. To put this in context, only 14 vehicles managed to complete the race.

In the overall competition, which takes into consideration both static and dynamic events, UM Racing managed to achieve a top ten position, coming in 9th place, ahead of many top UK and international teams.

This weekend has been a testing ground and an excellent opportunity for the students to face challenges, setbacks, disappointment and yet keep on excelling, working hard and demonstrating our worth internationally. Prof. Inġ. Rieko Raute joined Prof. Inġ. Emmanuel Francalanza at the event to support the students. They are both very proud of their success, team effort and commitment.

They are all very honoured to carry the Maltese flag and represent the UM on an international stage.
