Cafetín de Buenos Aires

Since 2024, listeners of Campus 103.7 have been regaled with the brisk notes of Argentine tango. Now in its fourth season, Cafetin de Buenos Aires, hosted by tanguera Dr Karen Micallef Xuereb brings us weekly stories from the local tango community and beyond. Karen has interviewed local tango deejays, trainers, musicians and dancers about their passion, including Dr Paula Guzzanti and Dr Gordon Pace, from the University of Malta. Cafetin also goes beyond our local shores – a highlight of last summer’s season was having the reigning champions of BATango, the world tango championships held annually in Buenos Aires, as special guests on the show.

In this first ever radio series produced in Malta to be centred around tango, Karen, a legal professional who loves dance and music, also ensures we enjoy rousing, emotional music that ranges from early twentieth century Carlos Gardel classics to modern electrotango orchestra pieces.

Argentine tango has become an international phenomenon since the 1990s, with tango communities all around the continents hosting milongas, marathons, and themed holidays. Argentine stars are constantly travelling the globe to star at these events. The Maltese tango community also boasts deejaying and dancing talent, further enriched with international members, and enjoying close links with European tango centres, such as Brussels and Sicily.
