From ‘Da’ to ‘Papà’: how we address our fathers in Maltese

On the occasion of Father’s Day, we asked staff members and students what they call their dad in Maltese. The most popular names mentioned were “da” and “pa”, shortened forms of “daddy” and “papà”.

Mr Joseph Buttigieg, Assistant Lecturer within the Department of Maltese at the Faculty of Arts, shared insights into the various terms used to refer to one’s father in Maltese. He discussed both contemporary and historical forms of address, including some that may have fallen out of use, and highlighted a number of Maltese expressions related to fathers.

Minn “Da” sa “Papà”: kif nirreferu għal missirijietna bil-Malti

Fl-okkażjoni ta’ Jum il-Missier, staqsejna membri tal-istaff u studenti kif isejħu lil missierhom bil-Malti.
