What's new in Melitensia

Melitensia's book of the month – February 2026

[BE]Loved Malta : stories of sexual and gender identity, edited by Kenneth Cassar, Kenneth Gambin and Godwin Vella; published by Gutenberg Press Ltd.

This collection of personal narratives explores experiences related to sexual orientation and gender identity within the Maltese context. Produced in connection with an exhibition held two years ago, during the fiftieth anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexual acts in Malta in 1973, this book examines how society historically reacted to the LGBTIQA+ community.

Whilst documenting these stories from prehistoric to modern times, the book highlights individuals seen as precursors who suffered the consequences of their diversity and paved the way for later developments. [BE]Loved Malta is an integral part of Malta’s cultural heritage because it addresses diversity, inclusion, and human rights.

The list of new Melitensia acquisitions is available online.
