A Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) Experience in Helsinki

Between 15 and 19 September 2025, postgraduate Master in Nursing students had the unique opportunity to participate in the second edition of the Erasmus Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) on Antimicrobial Stewardship: Managing Antibiotic Resistance.

The programme was hosted by Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Helsinki, Finland, and organised in collaboration with partner higher education institutions:

  1. The Department of Nursing of UM,
  2. The Università degli Studi di Milano (Italy), and
  3. The University of Primorska (Slovenia).

This BIP addressed one of the most pressing global health challenges: Antibiotic Resistance, through an engaging mix of theory, practice, and intercultural exchange.

Highlights of the week included:

  • Hands-on training in simulation settings
  • replicating diverse clinical environments such as the intensive care unit, operating theatre, emergency department, and neonatal and paediatric wards.

These sessions provided students with practical skills while strengthening their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Interprofessional collaboration and networking, with students learning alongside peers and experts from different countries and healthcare settings. Cultural immersion in Helsinki, where participants explored Finnish traditions, architecture, and local experiences, further enriching the international learning journey.

Students described the experience as a transformative blend of academic growth, cultural discovery, and professional networking. The opportunity to step outside familiar environments and engage with diverse healthcare systems was key, inspiring them to integrate these insights into their future nursing practice and research.

The Department of Nursing is proud to continue leading initiatives like this BIP, reaffirming its commitment to international collaboration and to preparing the next generation of nurses to tackle global health challenges.
