Pathology Department Awards Ceremony 2025

The Department of Pathology, within the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, in collaboration with the Malta College of Pathologists, annually awards prizes to the top three students in the Final Pathology Examination, held during the third year of the medical course.

These awards recognise academic excellence and aim to foster continued enthusiasm for the study of pathology and its related disciplines.

This year’s award ceremony took place on 26 September 2025 at the Medical School.

The event was well-attended, with a strong presence from the Department of Pathology, as well as the Dean and Vice Dean of the Faculty, representatives from the Malta Medical Students’ Association (MMSA), several Heads of Department, and members of the administrative team.

Prof. Alexander Gatt, outgoing Head of Department and President of the Malta College of Pathologists, delivered a short address thanking all attendees and warmly congratulating the prize-winning students on their outstanding performance.

Their achievements were also commended by Prof. Reuben Tooze, the external examiner for the study unit, in his examination report.

The three students, namely Ms Jayde Mifsud, Ms Angie Purkiss and Mr Tymoteusz Piasecki each obtained over 80% in the final examination — a remarkable testament to their dedication and hard work.

Professor Gatt also took the opportunity to acknowledge the significant positive impact made by Ms Christianne Mizzi, the Departmental Administrator, whose dedication and professionalism have greatly contributed to the smooth day-to-day running of the Department.

Before concluding, Professor Gatt introduced the Head of Department Designate, Prof. Stefan Laspina, who officially assumed the role on 1 October 2025.

The Department is confident that through this appointment, its strong legacy of academic excellence, collaboration, and service will continue to grow and be further enhanced in the years ahead.

Finally, the Department would like to take this opportunity to recognise the students who received prizes in 2023 and 2024, whose accomplishments had not yet been publicly celebrated.

Congratulations to all award recipients, past and present, and sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to making this event a success.
