QALYPSO 2026: Quantum Optimisation Techniques & Physics of Computation

Event: QALYPSO 2026: Quantum Optimisation Techniques & Physics of Computation

Date: 31 August - 4 September 2026

Time: See the conference programme

Venue: University of Malta Valletta Campus

Following the success of its 2022 and 2024 edition, QALYPSO Summer School is returning to the University of Malta’s Valletta Campus from 31 August to 4 September 2026.

The five-day event, including a crash course and hackathon in collaboration with quantum industry, will once again transform the historic University of Malta Valletta Campus into a vibrant hub for the international quantum community.

QALYPSO 2026 is an inclusive space for growth, open to all academic levels – from undergraduate and Master’s students to PhD researchers and postdocs. To ensure that content is rewarding for everyone, the school offers parallel Basics and Advanced tracks. This structure enables those new to the field to build a strong foundation and the experienced researchers to engage deeply with the high-level theoretical knowledge.

QALYPSO 2026 key themes

The curriculum for this edition focuses on three of the most cutting-edge areas in modern physics, hosted by world-leading experts:

  • Quantum Optimisation & Applications led by Marco Tulio Quintino (LIP6, Sorbonne) and Jessica Bavaresco (LIP6, Sorbonne)
  • Quantum Thermodynamics & Physics of Computation featuring Mauro Paternostro (Uni Palermo) and Marti Perarnau-Llobet (UAB Barcelona)
  • Quantum Gibbs Sampling and Boltzmann Machines directed by Alvaro Alhambra (CSIC Madrid) and Angela Capel (Cambridge Univ).

By balancing academic lectures with hands-on sessions, the programme ensures that theory is put into practice, enhancing both understanding and retention.

Networking beyond the classroom

The experience extends beyond the lecture setting. On 2 September 2026, a dedicated Social Dinner will foster a relaxed setting for participants to connect with scientists from all over the globe. These interactions often lead to life-changing opportunities and long-term collaborations that define a researcher’s career.
