Photography reached our shores in 1840. This was quite early in the day considering and thus our islands have a wealth of archival records of a photographic nature. In 2015, the National Archives joined forces with photographer Kevin Casha and APS to commemorate the events that took place in Malta in 1935 on the occasion of King George V’s Silver Jubilee festivities. The title for the exhibition is inspired by the historical analysis of the times and circumstances under which the celebrations took place. May 1935 reflected the calm before the storm of war. World War II was to be a seminal event in recent Maltese history, irreversibly breaking the waters towards radical changes within Maltese society. The images on exhibit will depict the Malta prior to this turbulent period and the efforts of the ruling elite to cynically distract the Maltese from their real problems.
