Saturday 05 November 2022 -  Harbour cruise [FULLY BOOKED]

Minimum of 20 persons 

The group will depart from the conference venue (Valletta Campus) at 14:40hrs to walk toward Pinto Wharf, boarding the vessel at 15:00hrs. [TIME AMENDED]. The tour will offer participants the opportunity to enjoy the impressive views of the Grand Harbour, one of the most important zones on the Maltese Islands, for both historical as well as economical reasons. Of particular note are the massive fortifications dating back to the period of the Knights of the Order of St John (16th, 17th and 18th Century) as well features added in more recent times, such as the breakwater and the industrial area. The one-hour experience will also include the Marsamxett Harbour, offering a more comprehensive understanding of the maritime importance of this area thoughout different eras.

No transport back to hotels is being provided after the harbour cruise.

Option 1 - Gozo Tour 

Transport will leave from a central location (to be announced closer to date) to take group to Cirkewwa Harbour to catch the 09:00hrs ferry to Gozo. The group will be accompanied by a licensed tourist guide and will visit the prehistoric UNESCO World Heritage site of Ggantija (entrance fee extra – to be paid at the entrance to the site) and the Citadel in Rabat, offering not only a glimpse into Gozo’s Medieval history but also amazing views of the surrounding countryside. A brief visit to picturesque Dwejra as well as a stop at the Calypso cave are also included in the programme. No lunch is included - free time will be allocated accordingly. Return via the 16:30hrs ferry from Mgarr [TIME AMENDED]

Option 2 – Malta Full-day tour 

Transport will leave from a central location (to be announced closer to date) at 09:00hrs. Accompanied by a licensed tourist guide, the group will visit first the site of Ghar Dalam, a cave of particular importance for the remains of Palaeolithic animals discovered as well as for the cultural layers that present the earliest evidence of human presence on the island dating back to more than 7,000 years ago. The group will then move on to the Neolithic site of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra, with its impressive megalithic structures, highly informative visitors’ centre and amazing views of the surrounding area. Free time will be allocated for lunch at nearby Wied iz-Zurrieq. Afterwards the group will visit Fort St Angelo, located in the maritime city of Birgu. Referred to as HMS St Angelo during the British era, the site was originally the medieval Castrum Maris, altered and updated by the Knights of the Order of St John in the 16th century, and used for military purposes until the British forces left the island in 1979. Nowadays it is open to the public with interesting interpretative displays, while allowing visitors to enjoy a fantastic view of the Grand Harbour.

Entrances to the sites (Ghar Dalam, Hagar Qim & Mnajdra, and Fort St Angelo) is not included – the fee needs to be paid directly at the door in each respective case. No meals are included.

DIVING EXCURSIONS 

Diving excursions may also be organized upon request on Saturday 05 November (afternoon) and Sunday 06 November. Kindly contact Seashell Dive Centre via email for details and booking, and quote conference reference 'Under the Mediterranean II'. Sessions available for both beginners and experienced divers.
