COURSE OVERVIEW
The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree provides a comprehensive knowledge of and training in the core legal subjects of a substantive law nature. The main areas of the law which will be covered during the course include Public Law, Civil Law, Criminal Law, International Law, Commercial Law, Environmental and Resources Law, Media, Communications and Technology Law, Legal History and Methodology and European and Comparative Law.

The course requires students to acquire a detailed knowledge of the basic principles of law and also good knowledge of substantive law. Various elective study units are offered throughout the course and students must sit for end of semester examinations.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme
The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.
 
LEARNING OUTCOMES Students successfully completing the Bachelor of Laws Hons. Degree course should:

a. Demonstrate an ability to develop a research proposal and carry out independent research

b. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of research skills and methods applicable to a particular field

c. Have gained the ability to analyse particular issues in different fields of law

d. Be capable of advancing their knowledge in their chosen area of focus and thus, be eligible to follow post-graduate degree courses in law.
 
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND ACCESS TO FURTHER STUDY Though not a degree leading directly to the pursuit of a specific profession, the areas covered may equip students with knowledge and skills which may be utilised in other careers (as in the public service, banking and in other commercial occupations).

The course will also enable students to pursue a range of postgraduate studies. At the University of Malta, students may, among others, then read for the degree leading to the profession of Advocate or Notary Public, the Master of Laws in European and Comparative Law, the Master of Laws in International Law, the Master of Arts in Mediation, the Master of Arts in Human Rights and Democratization of Governance, and the Master of Arts in Ocean Governance.
 
COURSE INTENDED FOR The course is aimed at any student wishing to obtain an undergraduate degree in law.
 
MOBILITY PERIOD Students who wish to participate in an ERASMUS exchange are encouraged to do so during the first semester of the fourth year of the course.
 
ADMISSION AND
PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.

Applicants must also satisfy the following Special Course Requirements:

Two passes at Grade C or better at Advanced Matriculation Level or equivalent in English and Maltese and three passes at Intermediate Matriculation Level or equivalent, one of which at grade C or better, in subjects chosen as follows: one subject from Group 2, one subject from Group 3, and another subject (except English and Maltese).

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2018.
