COURSE OVERVIEW
The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree provides a comprehensive knowledge of and training in the core legal subjects of a substantive law nature. The main areas of the law which will be covered during the course include Public Law, Civil Law, Criminal Law, International Law, Commercial Law, Environmental and Resources Law, Media, Communications and Technology Law, Legal History and Methodology and European and Comparative Law. The course requires you as a prospective student to acquire a detailed knowledge of the basic principles of law and also good knowledge of substantive law. Various elective study units are offered throughout the course which you must sit for end of semester examinations. You are also encouraged to participate in the Erasmus+ mobility learning period in the first semester of your final year of studies, as we believe a diverse and multicultural academic journey will make you better practitioners of the law.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme
The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.
 
LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of the course, you will:

• Demonstrate an ability to develop a research proposal and carry out independent research
• Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of research skills and methods applicable to a particular field
• Have gained the ability to analyse particular issues in different fields of law
• Be capable of advancing their knowledge in their chosen area of focus and thus, be eligible to follow post-graduate degree courses in law.
 
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND ACCESS TO FURTHER STUDY The course will enable you to pursue a range of postgraduate studies, where you can read for a degree that leads into the profession of Advocate or Notary Public, the Master of Laws in European and Comparative Law, the Master of Laws in International Law, the Master of Arts in Mediation, the Master of Arts in Human Rights and Democratization of Governance, and the Master of Ars in Ocean Governance. As a graduate, you will be equipped with knowledge and skills which may be utilised in other careers (as in the public service, banking and in other commercial occupations).
 
COURSE INTENDED FOR If you would like to pursue a legal profession and gain an undergraduate degree in law, then this is the course intended for you.
 
MOBILITY PERIOD Students who wish to participate in an ERASMUS exchange are encouraged to do so during the first semester of the fourth year of the course.
 
ADMISSION AND
PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.

Applicants must also satisfy the following Special Course Requirements:

(a) two passes at Grade C or better at Advanced Matriculation Level or equivalent in English and Maltese, and three passes at Intermediate Matriculation Level or equivalent, one of which at grade C or better, in subjects chosen as follows: one subject from Group 2, one subject from Group 3, and another subject (except English and Maltese) or

(b) a degree at MQF level 6 in any area of study awarded by the University of Malta or any other higher education institution recognized by Senate, and a pass at Grade C or better at Advanced Matriculation level or equivalent in Maltese,
provided that if the degree is in Maltese a pass at Grade C or better at Advanced Matriculation Level or equivalent in English is also required.

Applicants considered as “Adult Learners” (mature applicants) in terms of paragraph (c) of regulation 6 of the Admissions Regulations apart from being in possession of those qualifications or experience that would satisfy the Faculty Admissions Committee that they have reached the academic standard required to follow the Course with profit, shall also be in possession of a pass at Grade C or better at Advanced Matriculation Level in English and in Maltese or equivalent. Such applicants shall also be required to submit with their application a letter written in English giving their motivation for applying for the Course together with a copy of their Curriculum Vitae (C.V.).

Details regarding the assessment of mature applicants (adult learners) will be made available here. The closing date for receipt of applications from applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' is 31 August 2022 at 2pm.

Requires the submission of a Police Certificate of Conduct.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2022.
