The Ottoman siege of 1565 in Tim Willocks’s The Religion

Abstract

It is the purpose of the present dissertation to analyse and discuss the interplay of accurate historical knowledge and historical fiction play in Tim Willocks's novel The Religion. Especial attention will be focused on the Ottoman Siege of Malta of 1565, during which most of the action takes place. In so doing, I shall question and assess the historical validity of certain features about the siege as they emerge in the novel. Why did the siege, for example, actually happen? Other questions will include the decision of the Ottomans attacking in 1565 rather before and whether the Hospitallers were prepared for such a siege. Moreover after analysing the way Willocks portrayed the siege and contrasting and comparing it to historical knowledge, the dissertation will also delve into the relevance of the outcome of the siege to the history of the Mediterranean and whether Willocks goes into this topic in his novel. This dissertation would have never been possible if not for the backing of a number of people. First and foremost, I am deeply appreciative of my tutor, Professor Victor Mallia Milanes, for his constant support, vital criticism and invaluable teachings about the Order. His lectures made me become more interested in the Order and gave me insights that I would have never thought of before. Overall he was instrumental in the writing of my dissertation. Secondly I am indebted to Dr. Emmanuel Buttigieg, who actually gave me the idea for my dissertation. Despite the fact that he was not my tutor, he constantly sent me sources to work on and did not hesitate to offer help. I cannot leave out my colleague Keith Gatt, who introduced me to Tim Willocks and his novel The Religion. It was he, who suggested I read and use the novel for my dissertation, and in that regard I am grateful he did because the novel exceeded all expectations.
