A double dose of unitarism : employment relations in a small firm in small island state

Abstract

This article utilises original fieldwork from Fiji to propose a better understanding of employment relations in very small firms located in small scale societies. The familiar concept of 'unitarism' in workplace dynamics is over-ridden by the intimacy and clannishness found in many small, often island based, societies. The cumulative effect is an environment disposed towards communalism, strict conformity and even stronger authority figures
