| Abstract: | For the first time in many years, the subject of European Union membership did not dominate Maltese national politics, having been resolved finally in a referendum and general election the previous year. Malta joined, along with the nine other new candidates, on 1 May 2004, with grand celebrations that did justice to the time, energy and resources that the Nationalist (PN) Government had invested in the matter. |
