Abstract: On 9 March the Maltese electorate overwhelmingly voted into office the Labour Party (PL), led by Joseph Muscat, bringing to an end 15 years of Nationalist Party (PN) rule. With a background of relative economic stability, the issues dominating the electoral campaign bore little resemblance to the latest elections in struggling Mediterranean economies like Spain, Greece and Italy (Dinas and Rori 2013; Garzia 2013; Kennedy 2012). Instead the election mostly hinged on competence and credibility.
