Abstract: | On 5 September 1998, the Maltese returned to office the Nationalist Party (PN), in a snap election precipitated by dissent within the governing Labour Party (MLP). Under certain aspects, the circumstances in which the election was called, as well as the nature of its outcome, were unprecedented in Malta's political history. The 5 per cent advantage obtained by the PN over the MLP represented a remarkable reversal of the triumphant Labour victory of 1996, which in its turn had appeared to be an equally notable reversal of the advantage obtained by the PN in 1992. |
