| Abstract: | In spite of the small size of its landmass and population, and its lack of natural resources, during the second half of the 20th century Malta experienced a significant process of export-led industrialisation driven by foreign direct investment and foreign technology (henceforth ELIFIT). The growth generated was sufficient to replace jobs lost with the rundown of British and NATO military bases (making further mass emigration to Australia, Canada and the US unnecessary and even to encourage return migration during the 1970s) and to pay for an expensive welfare state and a system of free public education up to and including university. |
