Abstract: In today’s busy life, leisure activities are not always given much importance. This study brings to light the importance of leisure activities, both for the well-being of the individual and for the development of social inclusion within schools and communities. This study, entitled “A Social Inclusion Process through Leisure Activities – aiming for better education” discusses social inclusion, social exclusion and leisure activities whilst analysing how these three terminologies are inter-related. Through relevant literature, this study highlights the general benefits of leisure activities in relation to social inclusion especially within the school community. In relation to the advantages of leisure activities, this study brings to light the restrictions that hinder children from participating in leisure activities. Furthermore, this study stresses on the significance of incorporating leisure education in schools. This is done since leisure education is an important element that helps children recognise the importance of leisure activities in their lives. It also equips them with the essential skills to participate in leisure activities. In Malta, however, leisure specialists who could guide teachers how they can promote leisure activities are not currently recruited. Hence, this study provides suggestions on how leisure education can be integrated in our primary classrooms during the school day so as to equip students with the necessary skills to facilitate social inclusion.
