| Abstract: | When discussing the relationship between human rights and the conflict cycle, one may question whether any relationship between the two is possible apart from an inherently contradictory one. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights emphasises at the outset the notion that human rights and peace are inextricably linked: “Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world” Thus, if human rights is the foundation upon which peace is built does it not follow that violent conflict is a denial of human rights in itself? |
