Abstract: By the early decades of the eighteenth century, France held a very strong position of influence in Malta vis-a-vis the powers of Western Europe. French Mediterranean commerce had acquired high stakes in Malta which was increasingly seen as indispensable for the commerce of France with the Levant and Barbary. This quasi-natural link between Malta and French Levantine interests at this time was clearly recognized by the French themselves, and it found utterance later on in the century when the Order was threatened by the Revolutionary era.
